A Rs. 10,000 annual fee credit card sounds like an extravagance. For the right user, it is one of the better financial moves of the year. For the wrong user, it is Rs. 10,000 gone.
The difference is whether you actually use the benefits.
The Benchmark Test
Before evaluating any premium card, apply this test: add up the value of benefits you would realistically use in a year. If that sum exceeds the annual fee by at least 1.5x, the card earns its keep.
HDFC Infinia Credit Card
Annual fee: Rs. 12,500 + GST (Rs. 14,750 effective)
Key benefits:
- Unlimited domestic and international airport lounge access (Priority Pass, Dreamfolks, HDFC partner lounges)

- Complimentary golf rounds (6 per year at partner courses)
- Concierge service, hotel upgrade benefits
- 2x points on travel and dining
Value calculation for frequent traveler (8+ flights/year):
- 8 lounge visits: 8 x Rs. 500 (lounge entry cost) = Rs. 4,000
- Rewards on Rs. 5 lakh annual spend at 3.33%: Rs. 16,650
- Golf rounds (4 used): 4 x Rs. 2,000 = Rs. 8,000
- Total benefit value: Rs. 28,650
- Annual fee: Rs. 14,750
- Net gain: Rs. 13,900
The Infinia is invite-only or requires HDFC’s premium banking relationship. The HDFC Regalia Gold is the accessible step below (Rs. 2,500 fee, similar benefit structure at lower reward rates).

ICICI Sapphiro Credit Card

Key benefits:
- 4 domestic + 4 international lounge visits per year
- Buy 1 Get 1 on movies (BookMyShow, 2 per month)

- Milestone cashback up to Rs. 7,500 at Rs. 6 lakh annual spend
Best for: Golf enthusiasts and moderate travelers who bank with ICICI.
Who Should NOT Get a Premium Card
- You fly fewer than 4 times a year (lounge access does not justify the fee).
- You spend less than Rs. 2 lakh per year on the card.
- You carry a balance on the card (interest charges negate every reward).
- You are not disciplined about tracking and redeeming reward points before expiry.
Premium card points often expire in 2-3 years. Unredeemed points are a pure gift to the bank.
How to Actually Maximize the Card
- Use the card for all monthly expenses: groceries, fuel, utility payments, online shopping. This builds spend quickly toward the milestone benefits.
- Book all travel (flights, hotels) through the card to earn accelerated points.
- Use lounge access deliberately on every eligible flight - do not skip it because you are “in a rush.” Each visit saves Rs. 500 to Rs. 800.
- Set a calendar reminder 30 days before your points expire.
- If annual fee is charged and you have not crossed the spend waiver, call retention immediately (see the fee waiver article for the script).
Bottom Line
A Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 annual fee credit card pays for itself multiple times over if you fly 6+ times per year, watch 10+ movies, or spend Rs. 3 lakh+ on the card. The Axis Magnus delivers the highest value for travel spenders; the SBI Elite is the cleanest entry-level option for movie-goers and occasional travelers. If you have to think hard about whether you will use the benefits, you probably will not - and the card will just cost you money.
